MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS THERAPY CENTRE (LOTHIAN)

HOW CAN WE HELP YOU?

The aim of the Centre is to encourage people to help each other through mutual support and to promote a better quality of life for MS sufferers and there families. Our Centre opened in March 1984 and is one of fouteen such centres based in Scotland providing a range of therapies and support for people with Multiple Sclerosis. We offer Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Physiotherapy, Reflexology and Aromatherapy, and information on diet and all aspects of MS. Patients contribute as much as of the cost of their treatment as they can afford.

SERVICES OFFERED

PHYSIOTHERAPY, REFLEXOLOGY AND AROMATHERAPY

Our chartered physiotherapists have a very welle-quipped Department. Each patient attending is given a detailed assessment of his or her condition with exercises and advice tailored to individual needs to promote general health and maintain/improve control and mobility of limibs.

Emphasis is placed on what people can do at home, with or without assistance. Adjustments are made as required to each individual`s programme.

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY

Hyperbaric Oxygen treatment is Not  a cure for Multiple Sclerosis, but it can be effective in the longer term in helping the condition to stabilise in many people. In addition, it often improves bladder control and reduces fatigue.

The initial treatment consists of breathing oxygen through a mask for one hour per day over a maximum of 15 days. This takes place in a large, pressurised chamber, which us to treat up to 7 or 8 people simultaneously.

This is followed by "top-up" sessions, which may vary from once a week to once monthly. All sessions are individually monitored.

COUNSELLING CONTACTS

We can advise patients and carers to go for confidtial counselling on problems relating to MS.

NUTRITION AND MS

Theree is much scientific evidence to suggest that diet has a role in combating MS. A healthy diet is of benefit to everyone; in MS it can help fight fatique and infection. Studies at the Central Middlesex Hospital shows that a diet rich in essential polyunsaturated fatty acids can help reduce the frequency and duration of relapses.

A booklet "Eating and MS" is available at the Centre along with a special diet cookbook and recipe leaflets.

HOW CAN YOU HELP US?

Annual running costs for the Centre are in the region of £90,000. Such a large sum of money is aways difficut to raise and we cannot do this alone.

JOIN OUR BANK OF VOLUNTEERS

We are always looking for practical assistance, and for help with our fundraising events, particularly from able-bodied people. This help is essential to keep our Centre operating and we will very much appreciate any support you can give us.

BY DONATING

We rely entirely on donations and grants, so any amount, large or small, will help the Centre assist people in their fight-back against MS.

VISITS TO THE CENTRE

Our Centre is open every day except Sunday, and anyone who wants to call in will be made most welcome.

We always encourage anyone with an interest in MS to come and visit our Centre, either as a patient, as a carer or as a representative of the Caring Services. If your group would like to be shown around, this can be arranged.
